How to Use the Cosmetic Formulation Calculator

1 — Search Ingredients

Type any ingredient name. The calculator auto-assigns it to the correct phase (A–F) based on solubility — powder, water-soluble, or oil-soluble.

2 — Set Percentages

Adjust the weight % for each ingredient. All must total exactly 100%. The balance indicator shows you exactly how much to add or remove.

3 — Enter Batch Size

Enter your desired batch size in grams, kg, or oz. The calculator instantly computes the exact amount for every ingredient.

4 — Export Your Formula

Download your formula as a CSV file. All ingredients are EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and US FDA compliant.

Understanding Cosmetic Formula Phases

A
Phase A — Powders first (dissolved in water)

Water-soluble powders such as Niacinamide, Salicylic Acid, and proteins. Powders must be fully dissolved before other phases are added. Heat water to 70–80°C.

B
Phase B — Water phase (liquid actives & extracts)

Liquid water-soluble ingredients: Glycerin, Aloe Vera, Hyaluronic Acid, plant extracts.

C
Phase C — Oil phase (non-polar — requires emulsifier)

Oils, butters, waxes, and emulsifiers. Non-polar ingredients cannot mix with water without an emulsifier. Heat to 70–80°C and combine with water phase while both are hot.

D
Phase D — Thickeners

Pre-disperse in glycerin before adding. Carbomer requires neutralisation with TEA or NaOH.

E
Phase E — pH adjusters

Added post-emulsification. Target pH 5.0–6.5 for most skincare products.

F
Phase F — Cool-down: preservatives & fragrance (≤40°C)

Heat-sensitive ingredients added only when the formula has cooled below 40°C.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate lotion percentages?

Add all ingredients, set weight percentages totalling 100%, enter your batch size — the calculator gives exact gram amounts instantly. Use our free lotion calculator above.

How does the emulsifier calculator work?

Add your emulsifier (e.g. Emulsifying Wax NF) to Phase C. Typical usage is 3–8% depending on total oil content. The calculator warns you if non-polar oils are present without an emulsifier.

How do I use the body butter formulation calculator?

For anhydrous body butter (no water), add all butters and oils to Phase C. No emulsifier is needed. Percentages must still total 100%.

What preservative percentage should I use?

0.5–1.5% depending on the system. Always add in Phase F (cool-down, below 40°C). Our preservative calculator auto-assigns these to the correct phase.

Are all ingredients EU and US compliant?

Yes. The Formula Chemistry database uses only ingredients compliant with EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and US FDA 21 CFR. Non-database ingredients trigger a compliance advisory.
